Overview
A 12-Day Journey into Tanzania’s Extraordinary Forest Biodiversity
Discover the hidden wildlife of Tanzania’s ancient mountain forests on a specialist 12-day herpetology expedition designed for reptile and amphibian enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, naturalists, and biodiversity explorers.
Organised by Kwamongo Expedition Eco Tour and Safari, this expedition connects four fascinating mountain regions: the Uluguru Mountains, Nguru Mountains, West Usambara Mountains, and Amani Forest in the East Usambara Mountains.
Each destination offers distinctive habitats, from humid montane rainforest and forest edges to leaf litter, streams, and secluded forest trails. These environments provide opportunities to search for remarkable reptiles, amphibians, chameleons, butterflies, and other fascinating invertebrates.
Potential target species include the Usambara bush viper (Atheris ceratophora), selected giant and pygmy chameleons, horned chameleons, and the Mazumbai warty frog (Callulina kisiwamsitu), alongside other wildlife associated with these mountain ecosystems.
Wildlife sightings depend on season, weather, habitat conditions, and natural animal behaviour. All species are treated as potential targets rather than guaranteed sightings.
Expedition Duration and Best Time to Visit
Duration: 12 days / 11 nights, subject to the final itinerary and accommodation arrangements.
Best period: The most suitable travel window depends on your target species, preferred photographic conditions, rainfall patterns, and the accessibility of individual forest sites. Some species may be easier to locate during wetter periods, while heavy rain can make trails and road transfers more difficult.
We recommend discussing your target species and preferred travel dates with us before confirming your expedition. This allows us to develop a realistic itinerary around seasonal conditions and the best available habitats.

The route and daily schedule can be adjusted according to your arrival point, target species, road conditions, accommodation availability, and the time required at each location.
Make This Expedition Your Own: Share Your Target Species List
Every naturalist and wildlife photographer has different interests. We therefore encourage guests to share their personal target species list before booking.
Whether you are searching for particular chameleons, rare frogs, venomous snakes, endemic reptiles, butterflies, or less frequently photographed invertebrates, we will review your list with you and discuss the most suitable locations, habitats, seasonal considerations, and realistic opportunities.
You are welcome to share:
Scientific names or common names of your target species.
Photographs or reference links to help identify your targets.
Priority species you most want to observe or photograph.
Your preferred balance of daytime exploration and night walks.
Special interests in macro photography, field observation, or natural-history documentation.
Our team will assess your wishlist and work with you to develop a personalised expedition plan. Where a species is unlikely to occur in the proposed regions, we will explain this honestly and discuss possible alternatives.
Your species list helps shape the expedition; the final itinerary will be agreed together before confirmation.
Responsible Wildlife Observation
Our approach prioritises wildlife welfare, habitat conservation, and respectful observation. We do not encourage unnecessary handling, chasing, or disturbance of animals. Encounters with venomous snakes are conducted from a safe distance, and all activities follow applicable reserve regulations and access requirements.
Join us for a distinctive exploration of Tanzania’s mountain biodiversity, guided by local knowledge and a shared passion for discovering and conserving the natural world.
